Marlene Hernández Casillas

 

Year and place of Birth : 1969, San Juan, Puerto Rico

 

Begins formal art studies at age 12 with the late Andrés Bueso in San Juan. Enrolls at the School of Fine Arts in San Juan (Escuela de Artes Plásticas) in 1986. Amongst her professors feature Fran Cervonni, Domingo García, Rafael Alicea, Félix Rodríguez, Adelino González, Consuelo Gotay, Tomás Cabán, Ramón Aboy, Ismael Dieppa, Julio Suárez,  Angel Nevarez  and  Rafael Rivera, all of them leading artists.

 

Awarded a Scholarship from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, to work and study along Alfonso Arana in his  atelier, also etching with Francoise Bricaut in Paris, France (1989-1990).  Exhibits follow: her own show in Montmartre and three other group shows within France:  Plástica Latina at Salon International Val D’Or, Societé Des Beaux Arts de Rueil Malmaison, and Salon International Des Arts XV at Buxieres-Les-Mines.  

 

Completes her Bachelor in Fine Arts in 1991. Joins the Puerto Rico delegation to Seville , Spain for the EXPO 1992 World’s Fair, after a rigourous proccess of selection, as aide-de-camp. Master in arts, in 2013 at Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe in San Juan.

 

Features twice (2004 and 2008) in art exhibits of the National Puerto Rican Parade at the Banco Popular Atrium in the Rockefeller Center of New York, along fellow artists Heriberto Nieves and Angel Nevárez. Her oeuvre  “Me refugio en ti” illustrates the essay about cuban martyr José Martí in the Encyclopedia “Voces de La Cultura : Testimonios sobre personajes, cultura, instituciones y eventos históricos en Puerto Rico y el Caribe” , Volume II (Ángel Collado Schwartz, Fundación Voz del Centro, 2006).

  Her work is found amongst several collections, incluiding The Museo de Arte de Caguas, Puerto Rico, Alfonso Arana Foundation, Banco Popular of Puerto Rico and The Latino Art Museum of California, and private collectors in Puerto Rico and abroad.
